September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month!

As Arthur says, “Having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card!” We couldn’t think of a better way to say it! In honor of that spirit, libraries across the United States celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month every September. This year, the American Library Association’s Honorary Chair is the Justice League’s Wonder Woman. Although we can’t be together in person, stay tuned to our social media and website for some library card fun online. Until then, here are five reasons you should see about getting your library card.

5 Reasons You Need a Library Card

  • More than a building.

A 2019 Gallup poll showed libraries were more popular last year than going to the movies, sporting events, concerts, museums and even the zoo. Cutting across gender, race and household income, among other factors, families reported an average of 10.5 visits to the library per year. (The half-visit was when they started to the library, only to realize they left the books they were supposed to return at home.)

This popularity might be from the fact that libraries are so much more than books. See numbers 3 and 4.

  • Access to more than 500 libraries and their materials.

Your library card is good at any other IHLS library in our area, which covers a geographic region of Illinois that is roughly Springfield and below. You can also request their items and be able to pick them up right at your own Millstadt Library.

  • Access to more than 70,000 books and audio books online.

Through the Cloud Library, you can access items anywhere and at any time. Available on desktop, mobile phone or tablet and up to five devices.

  • So much more than books! (DVDs, CDs, video games, magazines, etc.)

Sure, you can get the latest best-sellers, but you can also get the latest blockbusters, music, video games and more. (Much better than paying $30 just to read or watch something once, right?)

  • If you live within the Millstadt village limits, you’re already paying for one.

Look at your taxes. If it says Millstadt Library, then yes, you’ve already paid for your card. All you have to do is come in an Illinois driver’s license and fill out a quick registration card. Then you’re good for the next three years until you have sign-up again. That’s it and that card is your all-access pass to everything the library system offers.

What if you don’t live within the Millstadt village limits? Then you qualify to purchase a non-resident card. This fee is calculated yearly by a formula provided by the State of Illinois and keeps costs fair for residents who already pay taxes.

Still don’t want to get a card? That’s fine too. The library offers free computers, WIFI, programs and more. Check out our website,, for a list of free resources you can use now and for more information about our library and what we have to offer.

-Play along with our BINGO card and win a free book from our "Sell-Shelf!" Stop by the library to pick up your card, or print it from the image above.-
